This is a little tutorial about the wedding boutonnières I made for our rustic themed wedding! We were definitely on a budget, so I tried to steer clear of real flowers as much as possible. Besides the fact that flowers can get real expensive real fast, I love the thought of doing things a little different and thinking outside of the box!
I found this idea on greenweddingshoes.com and turned it into my own using some wood flowers that will last forever! I actually used the leftover flowers from the bouquets we made so that it all would coordinate!
Gather Supplies:
- Elmer's Glue or Mod Podge
- Glue gun
- Burlap
- Skewers or Wooden dowels (can find dowels at a craft store or Walmart)
- Cereal box or Cardboard
- Jute or some kind of string (white rope would be cute for a nautical theme)
- Wood flowers - I used Sola Flowers (white ones), Cedar Wood Flowers (brown ones) and Gold Yarrow (mustard ones) click here for save-on-crafts website where I found all these cool flowers
1. Cut out a leaf shape of cardboard for the back of the boutonnière (mine was about 3 inches long and 1.5 inches wide), use that shape as a stencil to keep all of them the same, I made 5 total.
2. Use that piece of cardboard to then cut burlap in the same shape, but just a little bigger - this will cover the cardboard.
3. Glue your burlap to the cardboard. I used Modge Podge because it's what I had on hand. It worked out really well because it stiffened as it dried which created a strong base. (if you use a cereal box, make sure you glue the burlap to the side of the cardboard WITHOUT any print so it doesn't show through)
4. Trim your skewer or dowel to about 3.5-4 inches and hot glue to the front of the burlap leaf. (Glue about 1 inch of it down)
5. Put a line of hot glue along the dowel and wrap your jute around it tight. Leave yourself a little extra at both ends that you can trim up later.
6. I took different combinations of flowers to figure out what looked best and started hot gluing them on one by one.

I took my biggest flower (white sola flower, its about an inch wide) and positioned it in the middle and then filled in the holes with the other two. (Mainly, I wanted it to look full and cover the wooden dowel)
Look at these cute brothers!!!
